Tolaga Bay is larger than most of the settlements on this coast and features some great accommodation options including Black Bach (see advert below) and The Tolaga Bay Inn (see advert above) which is one of the last remaining historical hotels on the East Coast. It has served the community and travelers for over 130 years. The current owners have ancestral links entrenched in the Coast and have a passion to restore this iconic treasure. With
this in mind plans are afoot to transform the country pub into a community hub including an information centre. To do this the aim is to incorporate various social enterprises to encourage economic growth of the Tairawhiti area. See their Facebook page for updates. The shopping centre has a good range of shops and the Uawa Garage (see adverts below). The town boasts a a nine-hole golf course, bowling club and skate park. The streets of this town are named after Captain Cook’s crew. |
Cook cast anchor here in 1769. The beach at Tolaga Bay is excellent for swimming and fishing and adequate facilities are available for boat launching. What is probably the best situated camp site on this coast is The Tolaga Bay Holiday Park about three kilometres out of town.

The Tolaga Bay Holiday Park is right on the beach at the end of the bay. The very long jetty served as a wharf for the area in the days of coastal shipping. A very popular fishing spot, this is also the start of the 5km Cook’s Cove walkway (2.5 hours) which provides
spectacular views of Cook’s Cove and the hole in the cliff wall.
